Both are easily accessed from the old town and provide panoramic views through their arches of the Grand Harbour and across to the Three Cities.

It's also a good vantage point for watching the daily firing of the canons at midday and 4pm.

Catania is a major gateway for visiting the fabulous little towns of eastern Sicil. We stayed in the city for several days on our way south this year and found a city rich in history, Baroque architecture around every corner, and a lively market surrounded by plenty of restaurants. All were within reach from this stunning Piazza.

Our third visit to Pompeii, the Roman city buried by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD, and we're awestruck each time.

Excavation work continues, and on each visit, we've been able to see parts of the city newly discovered by archaeologists, including many well-preserved frescoes. Scroll through to see a couple that we came across this year.

The fountain was built in 1635, and the cathedral was originally built in the 14th century and further enhanced in 1636.

Despite their austere appearance, both hold a certain charm attracting visitors and locals alike. You'll find many sitting for a rest, or just whiling away time in the Piazza when you visit Taormina, one of Sicily's most popular holiday destinations.

Don't just go see the attraction and tick it off your "places to visit " list, then rush off to the next place on your list. Remember to stay a little longer to soak it in.

We did exactly that when staying in Zermatt, Switzerland, this year. We spent a day up at the Matterhorn and also kept aside a few days for trekking the hiking trails around Zermatt which provided not only spectacular views of the peak wherever we turned but also a glimpse of the villages and countryside around Zermatt.

Golden hour in the seaside town of Cefalu, Sicily.

We wandered the streets of the World Heritage listed old town before watching the sun go down from this little spot at the end of the town.

Cefalu has become a popular beach destination in Sicily, with many visitors making the easy day trip from Palermo. For us, it was a treat to stay a few days in this beautiful town to enjoy the atmosphere and restaurants after the day tourists had returned to the big city.

Built by the Bourbon king, Charles III, in the 18th century, the Palace and its gardens are truly impressive and one of Italy's hidden treasures.

We stayed in Caserta and visited this World Heritage listed site while driving to the south of Italy, but if you're staying in Naples, the town is only a short distance away by road or train and very worthy of a day visit.

One of the best things we did in Malta was catching the bus from Valletta to the pretty town of Marsaxlokk. If you visit in the late afternoon, it's nowhere as busy as Valletta, and the seaside eateries are perfect for an early evening meal before going back to the city.
