Flying into Paris a week before the Olympics this year, we wanted to avoid the city amidst its preparations and instead took the opportunity to stay in Auxerre two hours drive away.

What a delightful surprise!. Auxerre is a city brimming with history, cobblestone streets, pretty churches, half timbered houses, and a stunning clock tower.

Whether it's a day visit from Paris or a longer visit like ourselves, we highly recommend taking the opportunity to visit this beautiful Burgundian city.

The impressive remains of the Acueducto de los Mil

The impressive remains of the Acueducto de los Milagros (Aqueduct of the Miracles).

The aqueduct was built by the Romans in the first century AD to transport water to the city when they controlled the area. It's located on the outskirts of the city of Merida in Spain.

We detoured to visit the archeological park after spending a few hours in Merida looking at the ruins there. Merida has some of the best Roman ruins in Spain, which date back to 8 BC.

One of the early highlights on our walk along the 800km (500 miles) of the Camino de Santiago in Spain was arriving in Pamplona during the annual San Fermin, Running of the Bulls festival in early July.

The festival has been celebrated since the 14th century. While the actual bull run lasts for only a few minutes each morning, the city continues celebrating all day and into the night every day!

It was a unique experience to be in the centre of the revelry.

Remnants of a temple at the Acropolis in the Selinunte Archeological Park on the Sicilian coast. Selinunte was a busy Carthaginian trading city built in the 7th century BC.

Most visitors go to Agrigento to see the Valley of the Temples forgoing Selinunte, which is one of the biggest archeological parks in Europe.

We recommend including it on your Sicilian itinerary. It's a wonderful place to spend a few hours immersing yourself in an ancient Greek city with the picturesque Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop.

We took this shot in Montreux, where we stayed for a few days. The town is known for its picturesque lakeside promenade, medieval castle, jazz festival, and access to some of Switzerland's finest wineries.

There's a reason why it's called the "Pearl of Lake Geneva."

We came across all of the above during our days 19 and 20 of walking the full Camino de Santiago. The walk, whether you're completing it as a pilgrim or not, takes you through some amazing places that few tourists will ever see.

Catania is a major gateway for visiting the fabulous little towns of eastern Sicil. We stayed in the city for several days on our way south this year and found a city rich in history, Baroque architecture around every corner, and a lively market surrounded by plenty of restaurants. All were within reach from this stunning Piazza.
