Lunchtime in Naples.

People watching is one of our favourite past times when we travel.

It gives a real insight into the city, tiwn or village we're staying in or passing through.

Our recommendation: Instead of staying in the main tourist spots and rushing from one attraction to another take advantage of the opportunity to travel slowly and simply so you can soak up the atmosphere.

The ancient Bayon Temple in the Angkor Thom comple

The ancient Bayon Temple in the Angkor Thom complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia is known for its towers and face carvings.

There are more temples and ruins to see while you're at Angkor Thom but with over 50 towers and over 200 faces carved into stones, it's easy to spend an hour or two in the Bayon Temple alone.

With most visitors keen to see the more popular Angkor Wat Temple, you'll find Angkor Thom less crowded in the mornings.

During our stay in Siem Reap we whiled away the morning around Angkor Thom, then took a long lunch break to assimilate and digest what we had seen before visiting Angkor Wat in the late afternoon.

We were driving to the south of Italy a couple of years ago and took the opportunity to return to Tivoli for another stay. We had stayed in the town a few years before but our priority at that time had been to visit Hadrian's Villa.

This time, we took a closer look around the town. Full of rustic charm and character and plenty to see and do in the area, we highly recommend staying a couple of nights to soak up the history and atmosphere.

The streets were quiet when we arrived in Paderbor

The streets were quiet when we arrived in Paderborn, a beautiful city in western Germany.

Entering the Cathedral we found ourselves a seat in the back pews.The city folk were at Sunday mass.

We love finding ourselves in the midst of local life in towns and cities offering the beaten path.

Interlaken sits on a small strip of land between two lakes: Brienz and Thun.

The town os also the gateway to visiting the mountains and smaller towns of the Bernese Oberland.

We stayed in a village on Lake Brienz, a few kilometres from Interlaken and were astounded by the breathtaking scenery we found around every corner.

A drive around the Bay of Kotor. The Bay which is a UNESCO World Heritage site is known as Europe's southern-most fjord.

We drove leisurely around the Bay to visit the town of Kotor. Surrpunded by steep limestone mountains and sheer cliffs, the scenery can only be described as breathtaking!

Stari Grad, the old town of Kotor is a wonderful maze of streets and alleyways where you can easily spend a day exploring.

Most certainly a place to add to your travel list.

Flashback to stopping in the charming town of Sopron while driving from Austria into Hungary.

The Hungarian city of Sopron sits on the Austrian and Hungarian border. Most of its citizens speak both languages. Some say it's easier to get to Vienna from Sopron than to Budapest!

In 1921 a referendum was held giving the people of Sopron a choice. Stay in Hungary or join Austria. The decision was made to stay in Hungary giving Sopron the status of being Hungary's most loyal city.

The city is definitely worth spending a few hours in. You'll find beautiful squares, towers and Roman ruins including the old town walls scattered across the heart of the city.

Palermo, Sicily.

Children playing in the streets, market stalls dotted around the city, heavily grafittied alleyways, charming streets and monuments.

There's something about how everything seems to blend so well together in this city of contrasts.

Vibrant and gritty. We were so mesmerised by the Palermo on our first visit that we returned for more! The only difference was that word has got out and now large numbers of tourists flock to experience the uniqueness that Palermo has to offer.

Want to avoid the crowds? We found that there are plenty of areas of the city you can visit away from the main tourist traps.

We absolutely loved wandering the streets of Dinan's medieval town but equally enjoyed a lovely morning walking along the ramparts and then around the more peaceful part of the town.

We still enjoy visiting the popular towns and cities in Italy.

Nowadays though, we seek out the smaller towns in whichever region of Italy we're planning to travel in.

We find them to be equally historic and stunning but most important of all, they provide visitors with a truly authentic experience.

These shots were taken in Piacenza, a vibrant town in the Emilia Romagna region. We found the town filled with history and architecture with the added benefit of being crowd-free!

We're Vimal and Smita, the faces behind Travelling Simply. Our home is in the beautiful city of Brisbane in sunny Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺

We've been travelling for many years and are lucky to have travelled with our children since they were babies. Today, we're empty nesters who enjoy travelling at a slower pace. Our passion for finding those unique places and meeting the wonderful people of our world has taken us to some fantastic places.

Travelling is an educational and very rewarding part of our lives.

As our love for travel has increased, so has the idea of travelling simply and immersing ourselves in the local culture wherever we travel. That is how the name of our blog came about.

We started our blog a few years ago to spread the word and share our experiences, finds, tips and recommendations.

We thank you for following us and hope that in some small way we inspire you to embark on your own travel adventures.
