We arrived at the UNESCO World Heritage listed site at dusk to experience the evening atmosphere. It was even more stunning than on our last visit.

The Valley of the Temples is home to some of the best preserved Greek ruins outside of Greece and a must-do if you're planning a trip to Sicily.

A glimpse throygh the city walls of St Peter Cathedral in the south western German city of Worms.

Worms was just one of the smaller cities which we took the opportunity to stop and explore when driving from Heidelberg to Frankfurt.

The 12th century Cathedral and its tall spires is one of the features. While not as heavily adorned as most others, we spent some time inside looking at the beautiful stained glass windows and enjoying the peacefulness inside.

The city boasts being one of the oldest in Germany. Much of the city's old walls remain and with no other tourists it proved to be just one of the perfect places to stop enroute to Frankfurt.

Morning mist accompanied us into the mountains to the Montserrat Monastery outside of Barcelona.

The 11th century Benedictine Abbey is perched high in the mountains surrounded by a National Park The Abbey is famous for its Black Madonna statue.

It's known to get busy with daytrippers and bus tours from mid-morning onwards so we made a point of arriving early in the morning to enjoy a visit inside the Abbey, around its beautiful grounds and walk a trail in the path.

We enjoyed the serenity and peacefulness away from bustling Barcelona for a few hours.

The brilliant tiled roof of St Mark's Church in Zagreb, Croatia.

The surrounding streets were busy so we were surprised to find that we had St Mark Square almost to ourselves when we arrived.

Built in the 13th century, the church boasts the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on one side and Zagreb's emblen on the other. It's one Zagreb's iconic landmarks.

Those of you who have visited Cesky Krumlov will agree that it's the quintessential fairytale town.

We saw the castle and its tower from the garden viewpoint in the town centre and made our way to the top of the tower later in the day for the panoramic views across the town.

We think it's worthy of more than just a quick visit on a tour. We staye in the old town centre for a couple of nights and found it even more fairytale-like after the daytrippers had left.

A wonderful experience that we highly recommend if you're planning a trip to the Czech Republic.

Maratea's seafront village.

Maratea is the perfect combination of a town which spans between a hilltop and the sea on Italy's coastline.

We stayed a beautiful accommodation overlooking the sea halfway between both the old town and seafront.

The area was recently affected by destructive storms and we hear they are now busy returning it to its pristine condition. If you're wanting a holiday in a less crowded part of Italy, Calabria is a wonderful destination and they would dearly love the support.

A flashback to visiting the pretty French hilltop village of Vezelay.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed village is popular Christian pilgrims and not overrun by tourists.

The village's main attraction is the Basilica which sits at the top of the main road. We were fortunate to visit inside while a service was in progress.

A reminder that it's okay to take yourself away from the major tourist magnets. You'll find more amazing spots like Vezelay wherever travel!
