A flashback to visiting the pretty French hilltop

A flashback to visiting the pretty French hilltop village of Vezelay.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed village is popular Christian pilgrims and not overrun by tourists.

The village's main attraction is the Basilica which sits at the top of the main road. We were fortunate to visit inside while a service was in progress.

A reminder that it's okay to take yourself away from the major tourist magnets. You'll find more amazing spots like Vezelay wherever travel!

The evening view from the patio of our cottage in Ramberg on the Lofoten Islands was absolutely magic.

The clouds were drifting low across the water and it looked like a miserable afternoon.

However, we arrive by the time we returned from across the island after hiking to the top of Reinebringen the clouds had disappeared revealing this beautiful scenery.

The Capella della Maddalena di Vitaleta in the hills of Tuscany's Val d'Orcia.

We took a day trip from our base of Pienza stopping in small towns and villages along with this little chapel tucked away off the main country road.

A walk of about 500 metres from the parking area to the chapel takes you along a path with vuews over the surrounding countryside before you reach the church.

We arrived just before a group of Italian tourists who were enjoying a look around the Val d'Orcia on their colourful Vespas.

The water clock in Rome's Borghese Gardens.

We try to visit the Gardens whenever we're in Rome. The leafy paths of the Gardens, just minutes from the Spanish Steps are a sanctuary in the heart of the city.

It's easy to spend hours wandering through the Gardens seeking out the monuments scattered around and visiting inside the Villa Borghese Gallery.

If you're intending to visit inside the Gallery (we highly recommend it) then book your visit time prior. To give visitors a premium experience, the number of visitors at any one time are limited.

The colourful buildings and waterways of Norrkoping in Sweden.

With tourists seeking out Stockholm as their "go to" destination when planning a trip to Sweden, cities like Norrkoping get overlooked.

Just 160km south of Stockholm, we spent a delightful few hours wandering through the old textile capital of Sweden.

The historic and architectural gems of old industrial buildings have been preserved and some turned into museums related to their past. The whole precinct is worth meandering around.

Looking at Dubrovnik's Old City from above provides a great perspective of the size of the well preserved old city.

We couldn't resist visiting inside the old city and walking its city walls again when we revisited Dubrovnik.

The nearly two kilometre path along the walls is panoramic, looking over the terracotta rooftops and out to the Adriatic Sea as well as into the nooks and crannies that make up the city.

Definitely a must-do if you're planning a visit to Dubrovnik.

Our recommendation: To enjoy a leisurely walk around the walls and a more enriching experience, go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Taking ourselves back in time today to our first visit to Vienna and inside this almost nondescript building in the centre of the city.

Inside the Jesuit Church (sometimes also referred to as the University Church), you'll find an opulent Baroque interior.

The detail and within is the work of a Jesuit architect, sculptor and painter, Andrea Pozzo. Decorated with frescoes and paintings, make sure you look up at the masterpiece illusionary dome which was painted on the flat ceiling.

People watching is one of our favourite past times when we travel.

It gives a real insight into the city, tiwn or village we're staying in or passing through.

Our recommendation: Instead of staying in the main tourist spots and rushing from one attraction to another take advantage of the opportunity to travel slowly and simply so you can soak up the atmosphere.

The ancient Bayon Temple in the Angkor Thom comple

The ancient Bayon Temple in the Angkor Thom complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia is known for its towers and face carvings.

There are more temples and ruins to see while you're at Angkor Thom but with over 50 towers and over 200 faces carved into stones, it's easy to spend an hour or two in the Bayon Temple alone.

With most visitors keen to see the more popular Angkor Wat Temple, you'll find Angkor Thom less crowded in the mornings.

During our stay in Siem Reap we whiled away the morning around Angkor Thom, then took a long lunch break to assimilate and digest what we had seen before visiting Angkor Wat in the late afternoon.

We were driving to the south of Italy a couple of years ago and took the opportunity to return to Tivoli for another stay. We had stayed in the town a few years before but our priority at that time had been to visit Hadrian's Villa.

This time, we took a closer look around the town. Full of rustic charm and character and plenty to see and do in the area, we highly recommend staying a couple of nights to soak up the history and atmosphere.

The streets were quiet when we arrived in Paderborn, a beautiful city in western Germany.

Entering the Cathedral we found ourselves a seat in the back pews.The city folk were at Sunday mass.

We love finding ourselves in the midst of local life in towns and cities offering the beaten path.
