Hillside dwellings as seen from the lookout at the

Hillside dwellings as seen from the lookout at the far end of the medieval hilltop of Vence on the French Riveria.

Having enjoyed stays in Nice on previous visits, we were looking for a low-key destination to base ourselves for a few days.

Vence provided the best of all worlds. Within easy reach of Nice, Cannes, Antibes and everything else on the Riveria, Vence gave us an opportunity to enjoy and explore its pretty streets and alleys, visit the other beautiful hilltop towns and spend time at the seaside.

Pop it on your list if you're dreaming of combining ambling through a quiet medieval town with a seaside holiday on the French Riveria.

We stayed in the northern Italian town of Trento on our roadtrip this year.

Surrounded by alpine scenery, we found a city full of history where we could enjoy the relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.

Mountains, a main square with a fountain, beautiful buildings and a Cathedral, a castle in the middle of the city, plenty of open green spaces and charming streets to stroll along, Trento invites you to linger.

Having the iconic Dolomites on its doorstep also makes it a reason to use it as a base.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Trento before continuing our roadtrip to stay in the Dolomites proper.

We'll share more about that in a post later this week.

Follow us to see our favourite places to visit in the Dolomites in your feed when it comes out.

Looking across to the Swiss town of Interlaken.

The town is conveniently located as a base for visiting Jungfrau. However, there is much more to see and do in and around Interlaken.

The beautiful turquoise Lakes Brienz and Thun sit either side of the Interlaken which also have smaller towns and hamlets around the Lakes to explore and linger in to soak up the panoramic views that surround you at all angles.

Learn more about some of our favourite spots to visit when staying in Interlaken through the link in the comments section below.

The Church of San Matteo perched high on a craggy

The Church of San Matteo perched high on a craggy hill is the first thing you'll see arriving in the UNESCO Heritage listed town of Scicli in southern Sicily.

Much of the town was destroyed in a devastating earthquake which hit the region in 1693.

Rebuilt in a distinctive Baroque style, like some of Sicily's other popular tourist towns, it's worth visiting. The best part is that Scicli doesn't feature in a lot of tourist guides so you'll have the streets to yourself!

This one's for all you nature lovers.

We're reminiscing on our roadtrip in Norway last year.

These are views of Geiranger and Geirangerfjord, one of the most popular destinations in Norway.

We loaded our car on the ferry from Helleyslt where we were based to sail through the beautiful fjords mesmerised by the amazing scenery and waterfalls that appear around every corner.

Off the ferry, we drove up to the lookout, had lunch and a wander around Geiranger before setting off in the car to return to Helleyslt through some rather dramatic natural landscapes.

What a day!

Scroll through to enjoy a few snaps of what we came across and make the day trip too if you're planning a trip to Norway.

The other side of the Ljubljanica River.

If you're planning a visit to Slovenua's beautiful capital city, Ljubjana make sure you keep time aside to wander through the areas on the other side of the famous three bridges.

Most tours and daytrippers arrive in the square of the city's iconic pink church, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and go directly into the old town over the triple bridges and only spend time there and at the cafes or restaurants on the riverfront.

We found the streets leading away from the pink church full of boutiques, local eateries, narrow alleyways and a mixture of architecture.

The beautiful City Gate in Speyer, one if Germany's oldest cities.

Walk through the gate and you'll get a sneaky peek at the world's largest Romanesque cathedral.

Speyer Cathedral is a historical starting point on the German pathways that connect to the Camino de Santiago.

We had the opportunity to look around this charming medieval city on an extended roadtrip through Germany and Scandinavia.

Being able to stop in places like Speyer and not following a strict itinerary is what we enjoy about independent travel.

Valencia is one of our favourite Spanish cities.

Valencia is one of our favourite Spanish cities.

Valencia isn't mentioned as often as Barcelona, Madrid and Seville are when considering travelling in Spain. With less tourists, you'll find Valencia very relaxed and walkable.

The home of paella has a generous mix of Roman and Moorish architecture where even the railway station is worth visiting inside. It stands conveniently next to the bullfighting ring.

Walk through the main entrance hall and take a look at the huge chariots which take part in the annual Corpus Christi procession.

Scroll through for a glimpse of what you'll find.

The Italian countryside is made for rambling.

On our roadtrip this year, we took the opportunity to visit some off the radar towns and villages in central and north-eastern Italy.

The walled town of Corinaldo was one of them. Located in the Marche region, it's a charming medieval hilltop town surrounded by well preserved walls which you can also walk along for the stunning views.

A must to visit if you're wanting to see both the Marche countryside and medieval towns and villages without the tourists.

Outshone by the more popular destinations like Vienna and Salzburg, Austria's second largest city, Graz is not as well-known.

We stayed in the city on our roadtrip this year and found it to be one of Austria's hidden treasures.

Hauptplatz is the main square and medieval city hub which is surrounded by elegant streets, beautiful buildings, a glockenspiel clock in another square close by and plenty of side-streets to roam.

We highly recommend incorporating a stay on your itinerary if you're planning a visit to Austria. You won't be disappointed.

Opera Garnier in Paris. If you're visiting Paris

Opera Garnier in Paris.

If you're visiting Paris and looking for somewhere indoors to visit as the weather turns cooler, or indeed, to escape the heat in summer, you won't be disappointed with this stunning building.

Visit inside to see the opulent architecture, ornate staircases and sculptures and the glittering Grand Foyer before taking a look inside the theatre itself.

The main stage is due to undergo a major five-year renovation from the summer of 2027 until 2032 so now is a good time if you want to see the theatre before it's closed to visitors.
